INTRODUCTION :

Stainless steel is a corrosion-resistant alloy of iron , chromium and in some cases nickle and other metals . Due to its excellent corrosion resistance, high strength and attractive appearance, stainless steel sees a wide range of uses across both industrial and consumer markets.

Stainless steel is 100% recyclable , easy to sterilize and used in many applications. In fact , ordinary citizens interact with products made of stainless steel on a daily basis. Whether in kitchen, on the road, or in a building, it is everywhere. Most common uses of stainless steel are :-

1. Architecture and Construction – Due to its strength, flexibility and resistance to corrosion , stainless steel is now commonly used in modern construction. It is easily welded, has an attractive finish and low in maintenance.

2. Food and Catering – Stainless steel is used in kitchen accessories , cutlery and cookware. It is ideal for food production and storage as it does not affect the flavor of the food.

3. Medical – Stainless steel is ideal for hygienic environment as it’s easily sterilized . Surgical implants use it as well as replacement joints such as artificial hips.

4. Automotive and Transportaion – The use of Stainless steel in automotive industry is increasing . It is used in car exhaust systems, trim and grills . It is used in all forms of transportation including ship containers, road tankers and refuse vehicles.

Summary :

When chromium is added to steel, it forms chromium oxide , which acts as aprotective surface to prevent air and moisture from causing rust, as happens with ordinary steel. Chromium is added in quantities ranging from 10.5% to 30% , depending on the application or anvironment in which the steel is to be used. There are more than 100 different grades of stainless steel but they can be grouped into five major types – Austenitic stainless steel , Ferritic stainless steel, Martensitic stainless steel, Duplex stainless steel and Precipitation hardening stainless steel.

Stainless steel is easily fabricated , strong and durable, easy cleaned and maintained, long lasting with a low lifecycle cost and environmentally friendly and recyclable.

Currently , imports of stainless steel in India are on the rise. But over the past few years, the Indian government has taken a number of measure to support the domestic stainless steel industry. India is the second largest consumer of stainless steel and one of the fastest growing markets. The country’s per capita stainless steel consumption has more than doubled to 2.5 kg in 2022 fiscal from 1.2 kg in 2010. Demand for it is expected to reach 20 million tonne (MT) by fiscal year 2047 according to a report. The demand for stainless steel has elaborately increased with the rise of electro-mechanical, engineering , architecture nd automobile industries. Stainless steel finds 80% of its usage in the manufacturing of cookware and durables. India is considered as the stainless steel powerhouse with an annual production capacity of 3 million tonnes .
